Description: When groomed for dog shows this little dog has a very regal and pampered appearance, but when sporting a pet cut, their true colors show through and we see the spunky merry dog. A small solidly built dog with dark eyes and a black nose that stand out against the curly white coat. Usually comes in white but may have shades of buff, cream or apricot.
Characteristics: This adorable aristocrat makes a fun and lively companion, far tougher and spunkier that most would give them credit for and is always ready to bark and growl in protection of the family at the first sign of trouble. Very intelligent, responsive and easy to train and makes a great choice for the novice dog owner.
The Bichon Frise is an extremely happy and cheerful dog, always ready to play and loves to be the center of attention. Affectionate and sensitive to an owners needs and moods and makes a wonderful friend who will be by your side every chance they can.
Fits well into family life, enjoying the company of children as long as they are not too rambunctious and rough – also gets along with other animals. The Bichon Frise makes a great choice for those living in an apartment for as long as they have been raised properly, is not given to unnecessary barking and yapping.
Like all little dogs they should not be spoiled outrageously as it can cause them to become a bossy tyrant who is noisy, destructive and even aggressive.
Origins: The Bichon Frise is a fairly old breed of dog whose origins can be traced back to the 13th. Century. It is thought they come from the Barbet Water Spaniel and possibly the poodle. Originally from the Canary Islands, brought to France and Italy by sailors. They quickly became a favourite with the French nobility and became the breed we know today.
Special needs: Needs to be brushed several times a week and bathed and professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks. Eyes need to be cleaned regularly to prevent staining. Extra care should be taken to make sure they don’t get fleas as they are more sensitive to flea bites than most dogs.

- As they once spent a lot of time on boats, being a companion and also a bartering item for the sailors, they have a special love for swimming and water.

- Despite his small size and adorable appearance, not a toy dog and does require some daily exercise. Owners should make sure they get at least a walk a day or some time in the dog park to play with friends.
