Abyssinian Cat

Abyssinian cat

Abyssinian cat

Breed:  Abyssinian

Description:  With their striking silky soft coat that looks like a wildcat and the long lithe muscular body, this elegant cat really turns heads.  Medium in size yet fine boned and slender, a very ancient and exotic looking cat.

Characteristics: The Abyssinian does not fit the role of the pampered lay about all day lap cat, they are active, extroverted and playful, always ready for fun. They’re intelligent and wilful, with an inquisitive nature that is thankfully tempered by a cautious streak.

This is a very loyal  and loving cat and will get depressed without human contact – not well suited for a home where they will constantly be left alone. Unlike most cats, The Abyssinian is only ok with other cats, but does very well with dogs.  They do fairly well with children, but can find the roughhousing of little ones a bit much.

The Abyssinian is considered one of the most active of all cat breeds and not without reason. They love to be involved in everything, is always exploring and climbing and can play with toys for hours. They’re happiest in an environment where there is lots of room to move around. This is a breed who would enjoy one of the big cat trees for climbing and playing on.

Surprisingly they can be a little shy with strangers, but with the family shows a deep love and loyalty. This is a quiet cat, not given to being extremely vocal, but like most cats will let you know when they want something.

Origins:  There are many theories about the origins of this gorgeous cat but most believe the place of birth was Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, and they were brought to England by sailors around the mid 1800s.

Special needs:  The Abyssinian has a very sensitive digestive system and once a food has been found they can tolerate you should stick with it. Others suggest that a homemade natural or raw diet is best.

Prone to gingivitis, so care will need to be taken to ensure teeth and gums stay healthy and clean.

Highlights:

- Unlike most other cats the Abyssinian loves water and enjoys splashing around in it.

- Abyssinians are not known for big litters, most having only 3-4 kittens at a time. The kittens are born dark and lighten as the weeks go by.

- A fairly healthy breed, prone to only a few health issues and has a usual life span of about 10-15 years.

- An excellent vermin exterminator.

-The Abyssinian is a very clever intelligent breed who can easily learn tricks and be taught to play games like fetch.
