The Burmese cat
Breed: The Burmese cat
Description: The Burmese is a strong athletic small to medium size cat. They are very elegant and foreign looking with glossy satin like short coat and piercing golden eyes. The beautiful coat, which once only came in sable, can now be seen in a variety of colours.
Characteristics: The Burmese is a very sociable and friendly cat, bonding very closely with their family. They are affectionate, loving and almost dog like inĀ behaviour -following humans around, greeting them at the door when they come home and playing games like fetch, even into adult years.
They fit in very well in any household from the quietest to the rowdiest and do very well with children, other cats and even dogs. They can be rather vocal, but it is such a soft sweet sound that it is usually not a bother at all. This is a very inquisitive cat, always wanting to be involved in everything that is going on and not one to be easily ignored. More so than many cat breeds, they demand to be part of the family and will not be happy if not allowed to.
Origins: The Burmese cat originates from Burma, Thailand and Malaya. Ancestors include the Siamese, the Bombay and the Tokinese cats.
Special needs: The Burmese is a relatively easy cat to care for. The short glossy coat could use a regular brushing during the spring to help remove dead hairs and prevent hairballs. They thrive on company and hate to be left alone for extended periods, owners who are gone to work all day might want to get them a companion of another cat or even a dog to help alleviate loneliness.
Highlights:
- The Burmese is a long lived breed , usually making it to 16-18 years, some even live past 20 years.
-Best suited as an indoor cat – simply too trusting and friendly and has little survival instincts to be safe outside.
- When started as a kitten, they become a great car companion, happy to go on short or long car rides with people.
- When looking for a Burmese kitten, best to go to a reputable Breeder who offers a health guarantee.
- In Thai the name means fortunate, beautiful and splendid appearance, and truly one is very fortunate to own this beautiful splendid cat.
